Harvest

Handout

Project Info:

Level: Intermediate

Estimated time: Weekend

Project By: Sam Applegate

In this 1-1/4 inch wide, 15 strand woven bracelet, Sam reflected on the colors of fall back home in Colorado. “It reminds me of the heirloom corn on the cob I see up at the ranch.” Harvest is actually not a pattern but a random selection of beads woven onto your loom in no particular order. As Janice says, “For those of us who cannot seem to follow patterns, this is fun and relaxing.” Select 5+ colors of 8/0‘s and mix them in a bowl. That’s it. This sample is considered Intermediate Level. Please watch the video and use the Project Map and printable PDF Graph to assist you when you are building your pattern. All techniques and steps are included in detail in the video, so it is crucial to watch.

The total length of this design from end to end of ultra suede cuff should be your wrist size plus a little bit (1/4-1/2 inch more). The design reads best if it is up against your wrist rather than falling too loosely. Since you cannot take the bracelet off to measure while it is still on the loom, knowing your wrist measurement beforehand is so important. If you need to, you can always make the width of your ultra suede cuff a bit wider for added length. Please watch the video before beginning.

Sometimes it is fun to just bead weave without a pattern. Or, if you are like Janice, find following a pattern challenging. We are calling this method “Pebbling” because it reminds us of the little stones of various sizes set into stone walls or walkways. A quick trick to pebbling is mixing all your beads up and picking them up randomly onto your needle. Janice suggests: the next bead you string onto your needle should not be the same as the last....that way you get an assortment. Also scan the rows you have just completed to make sure you are including all your choices of beads. “You can run out of a color in your bowl and not realize it for a few rows, but basically there are no rules!”
